C’mon Get Happy: Simple Ways to Feel Your Best in 2013

Being happy is sometimes easier said than done, but have you ever considered all of the benefits of being happy? When you’re happy, or in a good state of mind, you’re more attractive to others, you take better care of yourself, you’re more enthusiastic, you have more energy, etc. So instead of making resolutions you won’t keep, resolve to be happier this year. Here a some simple ways to get started:

Smile More

The benefits of smiling are numerous. We are drawn to people who smile. It truly is contagious. Smiling can also lower stress levels and can change our mood. It boosts the immune system and releases endorphins that make us feel good. But one of the best reasons to smile is that it lifts the face and makes us look younger.

Do One Thing You Love Each Day

Figure out what you love to do, if you don’t know already, and take the time to do it. Maybe you love to sew or read. Maybe you love to write or sing. It doesn't matter what it is, just do it. Take a break from your hectic schedule and do what makes you happy.

Exercise

Most of us don’t like to exercise, but it’s a great way to boost your mood and avoid depression. Exercising releases endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. It’s sometimes referred to as a “natural high.” Exercise can also boost our self-esteem. We will not only feel better, but the physical benefits, such as weight loss and muscle tone, will also make us look better.

Reach Out

If you are feeling low, reach out to those around you. Call your best friend or email someone you haven’t talked to in a while. Having close bonds with other people is a key component in being happy. When you are friendly to people, those feelings of friendship and love are returned to you.

Laugh

It’s cliche to say it, but laughter is the best medicine. Nothing boosts your spirits like laughter. It’s a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. It can bring your mind and body back into balance faster than any medication. So watch a funny movie, a silly YouTube video, or hang out with your kids. Nobody laughs better than kids.

Give Yourself a Break

It seems that the to-do list is never ending. We have so much to do and not enough time to do it. But not everything has to be done this second. It’s okay to procrastinate on some things or just say no to others. Take the time to just catch your breath. The flip side of that is ridding yourself of a nagging chore. Crossing a task off your list can be a great feeling. Get things done now to allow time for what really makes you happy.
